  • Purpose: The Purpose Of This Lab Is To Yield Isoamyl Acetate, A Banana Fragrance, By Reacting Acetic Acid And Isoamyl Alcohol - 1,089 words
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to yield isoamyl acetate, a banana fragrance, by reacting acetic acid and isoamyl alcohol. By reacting a carboxylic acid with an alcohol we synthesize an ester, in this case isoamyl acetate. Procedure: 1) Obtain 8.5 mL of isoamyl alcohol and 15.0 mL of acetic acid in a 100-mL round-bottomed flask. 2) Add dropwise 5 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid with boiling chips and reflux for one hour. 3) At the end of the reflux cool the round-bottomed flask in a cold water bath. 4) Pour the contents of the flask into a beaker with 40mL of ice water. 5) Pour the beaker contents into a separatory funnel and mix with occasional venting. If the two layers do not separat ...

2/23/99 The Hindenburg Disaster Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin and his crew operated their first airship nearly one hundred years ago. Airships are big controllable balloons, also known as dirigibles. There are three classes of airships, rigid, nonrigid and semirigid. Rigid airships (zeppelins) use framework in the interior to keep their shape. Semirigid airships are a combination of framework and gas pressure to maintain their shape. Nonrigid airships (blimps) rely solely on air pressure to keep their form. They are all propelled with engines, use rudders and elevator flaps for steering and have a gondola where passengers travel. The pride of the zeppelin works was a rigid airship which was o ...

... ven a small head size. Furthermore, FAS children may develop hearing problems, heart defects and physical and behavioural problems. Researchers have also found that some children who were exposed to alcohol during fetal development show only some of the characteristics of FAS, these children are diagnosed as having fetal alcohol effects (FAE). However, both FAS and FAE individuals may have some degree of brain damage (Brent, 1991). Clearly, in addition to physiological, social, and psychological factors which all play a role in contributing to alcoholism, recent studies reveal that there may be a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. More specifically, medical research indicates that alc ...

  • How To Manufacture The D Enantiomer Of Phenylaminopropane, And 3,4,methylenedioxymethphenylaminopropane - 5,322 words
... about 4 to 5 loads in your grinder to do the whole amount of foil, depending on the size of your grinder. (In actuality, the foil does not get ground, but rather, each individual piece just gets compacted and compressed. If it is compressed too heavily, the inner surfaces of the foil nuggets may be rendered inaccessible to the Hg/MeOH solution, changing the timing of the amalgamation and maybe even causing an incomplete or failed reaction.) When properly done, the foil should be in gnarled little nuggets about the size of long-grain rice grains and should look really tight and small. The smaller, the better for good stirring. 3. Place a 3 stirbar in your 2L flat bottom flask and onto yo ...

  • Organic Chemistry - 1,197 words
Organic Chemistry Organic compounds are covalently bonded compounds containing carbon, excluding carbonates and oxides. Carbon atoms are unique because of their ability to bond by catenation, which is forming long chains and rings from the covalent binding of an element to itself. Besides bonding with itself, carbon atoms are able to bind to elements with similar electronegativities. Organic compounds consist of carbon and these other elements. Hydrocarbons are the simplest organic compounds, composed of only carbon and hydrogen. Saturated hydrocarbons are hydrocarbons in which each carbon atom in the molecule forms four single covalent bonds with other atoms. Hydrocarbons that contain only ...

  • Polymers - 441 words
Polymers Polymer, substance consisting of large molecules that are made of many small, repeating units called monomers, or mers. The number of repeating units in one large molecule is called the degree of polymerization. Materials with a very high degree of polymerization are called high polymers. Polymers consisting of only one kind of repeating unit are called homopolymers. Copolymers are formed from several different repeating units. Most of the organic substances found in living matter, such as protein, wood, chitin, rubber, and resins, are polymers. Many synthetic materials, such as plastics, fibers, adhesives, glass, and porcelain, are also to a large extent polymeric substances. Struc ...

Is a true three dimensional light sculpture actually possible using our current technology? Sure maybe with multi-million dollar real time holographic laser projection systems, but is it possible to create a compact photon form relying on using scrap parts and ingenuity? Would it have a definite projection surface, or could it be visualized in plain air space, maybe relying upon condensed carbon ...
