Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance", though written in 1841, still hold quite a bit of relevance in our world. Conformity is a huge problem in modern society. For unlike Levi's Jeans, the world has not been original for a long time. Some people are scared to be themselves, some people are unaware of conforming, and others are fully aware of their unoriginality and just don't care. Anyway you cut it, there are a lot of people who look exactly alike today.

We are all different in some fashion, but many feel they are too original. They stick out. Right from the first stages of pre-elementary education to the latter stages of one's deteriorating life, those who are different are mocked, ridiculed and alienated by their peers. In kindergarten, students who are different are said to have cooties and are therefore cast out from such playground activities such as football and Barbie. Later, in secondary school they are forced to join activities such as chess club and Otaku. Finally in college and throughout their adult lives, they are driven to devote lives to trivial tasks before moving to Montana and sending explosives to those at the root of their misery via the U.S.

In other cases, the conformist might fool himself into believing that they, the poor unoriginal twit that they are, are original, unlike everyone else. This is a truly pathetic state of mind. For while in this trance, they cannot see themselves for what they really are: a chameleon, changing to reflect whatever trends MTV has spewed forth during the past week.

They end up wearing dog collars, fishnet stockings, military boots, and Marilyn Manson shirts while droves cry out, 'I'm so much different than the rest of you' in near-perfect unison. They have formed a conformist society nearly identical to the one they were revolting against. In their attempt to bring The Man down, they have, in essence, invited him into their midst. And then there is still a third section of conformists. They are fully aware of their trendiness, and really don't care.

They do nothing to avoid this state, nor to further it. But, if they are what they want to be, are they truly conforming? This is left up to a power higher than any of us. However, to the individual who, in the face of pressure to break away, stands tall in his Nike shirt and Jnco Jeans and can honestly say, 'This is the person that I want to be,' then a pat on the back is definitely in the works. A non-conformist doesn't have to be an outcast, they can be a normal, functioning human being. What separates the two is a state of mind. So, conformity, like most important personal traits is an intangible quality. It lies below the Abercrombie or Fila shirt.

What lies in the heart above the Vans or Sketchers shoes is what determines the individual's worth to the fight against our world's growing mob mentality. So, do you know any conformists?
